Derek was born and raised in Pella, Iowa, and well remembers how at family outings to Kansas City Chiefs football games he had to split a soda and hotdog with his brother—all because his father was trying to teach the Forsythe kids a valuable life lesson about the need for budgeting. At the time, the family teased their Dad for being so “tight.” Today, Derek knows how important smart financial planning is, and he uses that knowledge in his work with clients.
Growing up in a household of sports fanatics—the University of Missouri’s Faurot Field is named for his great uncle, a former head football coach at Mizzou—Derek learned the competitive spirit early on. He played baseball and football in high school and at Central College, where he graduated in 2008. The highlight of his undergraduate studies was studying in Granada, Spain for seven months, where he fell in love with the culture, and learned a little Spanish.
After college, Derek was program coordinator for the Des Moines-based global non-profit organization, where he managed an annual conference attended by 2,000 global participants and dignitaries. It was through that experience— working on public policy initiatives, conducting research on international travel and global interaction— that Derek discovered a passion for helping people from all over the world empower themselves
After graduate school at Drake University for Public Administration and Executive Leadership,
Derek worked in business development and program coordination for a start-up recycling company in Des Moines, where he helped businesses devise sustainability initiatives and promote corporate responsibility.
In 2014, impressed with its emphasis on educating clients, Derek joined Gershman Mortgage, where today he uses his experience and skills to empower people to make their home ownership dreams come true. His expertise in public administration allows him to stay up-to-date on regulations and guidelines, and interpret even the most arcane of them to clients during the mortgage process. Derek loves meeting and helping people with credit management, debt reduction, and hands-on advice during what may well be the most important financial investment of their lives.
Outside the office, Derek coaches youth football, golfs as much as possible, and loves to travel and experience new cultures.
He is a member of the Mortgage Bankers Association, YPC Des Moines, and Business Networking International, and is a fanatic Kansas City Chiefs, Mizzou Tigers, and Kansas City Royals fan.
One last note: Derek is happy to report that he shares a special affinity with many of his clients. He and his wife Emily, a local television account executive, have recently purchased their first house.
